「雀、はまぐりとなる」は、九月の不思議な季語。
秋の頃、浜辺に集った雀が急に姿を隠してしまうのは、海に入ってはまぐりに変わると信じられてきたことに由来します。

ユカワアツコさんのご自宅ベランダでは、エサ皿を目指す鳥たちが自由に鳥かごを出入りするという、なかなかシュールな光景が繰り広げられていました。
切妻屋根が昭和の文化住宅的なその鳥かごは、側壁のワイヤーが切り取られているのです。おまけに、ベランダに面する障子戸には小さな覗き窓が開けられていて、鳥たちにストレスをかけないように、思う存分観察できるしくみになっています。
1997年、ユカワさんは、忙しい会社員生活を卒業し、イラストレーターとして独立する道を選びました。ユカワさんが本領を発揮する動植物のイラストは、こうした日常のいとなみを、ちゃんと丁寧に見つめるまなざしに支えられているのです。
単なる細密画であることを越えて、独特の穏やかさを蓄えさせている所以です。
二つ折りのカードの表紙に描かれているのは、羽を休めてとまっている鳥です。ところが、カードを開くと鳥が飛び出すというしくみのトビダストリー。「鳥は飛んだ時にはじめて現れる模様や特徴があるので、それを表現したい。でも実はわたし、飛んでない鳥の姿が大好きなのでそれも描きたい」と言うユカワさんが、自分のニーズに自分で応えてみたのです。
