Product description: “Seimori”
Two years ago, I found a cute Japanese-bound embroidery sample book at a second-hand goods store. Although it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, it has the year name of 1902 on it and has over 20 different patterns carefully embossed on it. When I asked about it, I was told that it was a sample book of the embroidery called ``seimori,'' which was sewn onto the backs of children's kimonos in the past. Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that all monsters sneak up on people from behind. However, because there is a seam in the center of the back of the kimono, it is said that the eyes keep a close watch and protect you from monsters coming from behind. However, children's kimonos, which have the same width as the cloth, do not have a back seam. Therefore, a ``back protector'' is a thread that is inserted into a person's back to prevent monsters from entering from behind.
It seems to have been a nationwide custom since the Edo period, and a typical ``back protection'' had 12 stitches sewn into the center of the back with silk thread, three stitches down the left diagonal for boys, and three stitches down the right diagonal for girls, but gradually it changed into free auspicious patterns, and developed into various designs depending on the area. There were many more young children dying from prevalent diseases than now, so when we say demons, we are probably referring to illnesses and injuries. Sewing helmet and crane patterns with thread
By wearing them, they expressed the hope that children would grow up healthy and healthy.
In the 1920 edition of the sewing textbook, I found a page called ``How to sew a back guard''. At that time, it was certainly a custom that was still being passed down, but I think it was probably forgotten after that as Japanese clothing rapidly declined. Holding a needle in your hand to sew may always have a magical meaning. Indeed, I feel like I can believe that thoughts and wishes are trapped in the threads that are sewn.
Since then, I have been thinking about the possibility of someday working to introduce this ``Sekomamori'' in some form. When I came across Garage, a shop in Kyoto that sells gauze clothes and hand-embroidered sukajan jackets, it was finally made possible by a married couple.
Why gauze clothes and skajans (= shiny synthetic jackets with flashy embroidery on the back. It is said to have originated when American soldiers stationed around Yokosuka after World War II had Japanese-style embroidery on their jackets)? It may seem strange, but both of them said, ``I like making things, I like clothes, and I like doing everything myself from scratch.''
So, anyone can work hard and keep working hard at something they like, right? As you say, I love both of them and can't help but love them.
In any case, since we have the unique materials and techniques of skin-friendly gauze fabric and hand embroidery, I thought we could express a modern version of a back protector. For the embroidery on the back, I didn't have to stick to traditional patterns, so I asked them to use it in a sukajan-like style, and the design came out with a ``swallowtail'', ``phoenix'', and ``pine'' that really gave me energy. Gauze fabric is breathable and extremely light, keeping you cool in the hot season and retaining heat in the cold season, making it an excellent fabric that can be worn in all seasons. Furthermore, Garage uses this excellent double gauze on a bias (using the fabric diagonally). Then, it stretches both vertically and horizontally, so when you put it on, it fits perfectly and is incredibly comfortable. At first, it may be difficult to put on as the fabric gets pulled when you put the sleeves through, and you may feel something uncomfortable around your shoulders and arms. However, as you wear them, the clothes will gradually change their shape to suit your body shape, so you will experience a feeling of comfort that you can't get anywhere else.
We would be happy if our back protection T-shirts could serve as an opportunity to remember the unchanging wishes of mothers, which are put into each stitch.
