Shion Sugawara's machine embroidery

Shion Sugawara held her first solo exhibition in Tokyo in March of this year.

I got to know Sugawara late last year when Ikumi Kato, a discerning editor who keeps an eye on the activities of artists around Suginami Ward, informed me that she had met an interesting writer.
I use a straight-stitch sewing machine to embroider people and animals, and each expression, from grumpy to unfriendly, is unique and always draws laughter.
His series of machine-sewn lines representing famous paintings such as Van Gogh and Matisse, which was the theme of his solo exhibition, is truly spectacular.Although the poses and compositions remain the same, they have been transformed into a completely different world, like monochrome images seen in a dream.
If you look closely, you can see that there are thread pockets in various places that occur when the upper and lower threads do not match, but of course this is just a calculation. By subtly adjusting the stitch density and thread tension, and taking advantage of the unevenness of the threads that appear by chance, each character is given the appropriate amount of looseness.
The solid parts of the pattern are stitched repeatedly to make them stand out, and contrast with the soft lines to show off the rich expression of the thread, which shows an excellent sense of style.
